Dubbed as the City of Majestic Waterfalls, Iligan City boasts its more than 20 magnificent waterfalls. Among such awe-inspiring natural spots, Maria Cristina Falls is the grandest, may it be in height or in beauty. Its splendor isn’t merely manifested by its picturesque view but chiefly by its role as the primary source of electric power of the city and some parts of Mindanao.

 

Maria Cristina Falls is also known as the “Twin Falls” befittingly because of a large rock that appears to separate the falls in two. Its towering height of 321.5 ft. makes it as the second highest waterfall in the country, indeed an astonishing scene to see. The water comes from Agus River, the outlet of the great Lake Lanao, continuously flowing down and powering the Agus VI  Hydroelectric Plant of the National Power Corporation.

 

Its grandeur entices a great number of tourists from the country and even beyond hence significantly contributing to the city’s flourishing economy. Maria Cristina Falls, located within the NPC Nature’s Park, is available for trippers to see and marvel. It is 8.5 kilometers away southwest of the city proper. Unlike most of the waterfalls in the country, Maria Cristina spares you from long flagging trek for it is very accessible from the highway. Topping the list of its convenience, the road along is concrete and different forms of transportations are available in route. Park entrance fee is immaterial comparing to the precious experience you’ll get. Although its raging water prevents tourists from getting actually close to the falls, looking from the park’s view deck will give you enough of admiration. 

 

The waterfall can be reached via a public utility jeepney (PUJ) bound to Brgy. Buru-un from the city proper for Php 11. You could just ask the jeepney driver to drop you off at NPC. Park entrance fee is Php 20 and the Multicab tour ride is Php 10.
