TINAGO FALLS

There is more treasure in things kept hidden. While it is fairly prominent and famous already in the region, the majesty of concealment is very well fitting for the Tinago Falls. Although Iligan is dubbed as the City of Waterfalls as it has a total of 23 waterfalls, Tinago remains one of the well-known and most visited attractions of the city.

Apart that its moniker which means “hidden” in Filipino suits its location being situated mostly out of sight between the borders of Iligan City and the town of Linamon, local folks have its tale to tell about how Tinago Falls got its name. According to legend, there once lived a sultan named Agok and his wife who became too proud that they were punished after selfishly banishing an enchantress disguised as a beggar by casting a spell on their unborn child. The child was to become ugly. Because of the embarrassment of their acts and the consequences, they hid their child in a cave and named her Tin-ag which means “hidden face”. When Tin-ag finally came out of the cave, she was surprised by what she saw and the enchantress took pity of her by offering her to be transformed into something beautiful. She became the Tinago Falls.

The Tinago Falls somehow leaves quite a challenge for its tourists. To reach it, one has to trek 500 steps down leading to the blue lagoon of Tinago. It is a demanding task to take but is surely worth the long walk as what awaits down is the picturesque view of the falls itself, veiling over the cliffs as high as 240 feet, cold and refreshing. It certainly is a great and welcoming reward for everyone who dares. The river is calming despite its rumbling sound and of the laughter of people enjoying the scenery.

There are other things to do in Tinago. Aside from swimming, one can enjoy staying still in the small cavern under the falls by just merely taking in as much of the breathtaking sight, feeling the breeze and natural vibe of the place. There is also a raft ride available for everyone who wishes to have a head-on encounter with Tinago itself. It is safe and accommodating for groups. Additionally, in a place as beautiful as Tinago, there is little rest time to spare when you have so many views and subjects to take for a photo session.

The Tinago Falls can actually be reached through either of the two routes depending on your character. If you are the convenient type, you should take the Linamon route which will take you to the Highland Resort. However, if you are the adventurous type, the Buruun route should be right for you.

One of the best ways to experience the best of Iligan is to discover for themselves the city’s treasure of beauty and splendor in Tinago Falls, and to feel life in the most refreshing way even for just a day.
